I saw the 1939 classic movie 'The Wizard of Oz' again over the holidays and it struck me how current the film still is. It was originally meant as a political satire of the time, but it's messages can still be applied in today's society. I think the following quotes are self explanatory about today's distorted views on courage, love, knowledge, belief and beauty.


All about Courage

Cowardly Lion: Come on, get up and fight, you shivering junkyard!
[goes over to the Scarecrow]
Cowardly Lion: And put your hands up, you lopsided bag of hay!
Scarecrow: Now that's getting personal, Lion.
Tin Woodsman: Yes. Get up and teach him a lesson.
Scarecrow: Well, what's wrong with you teaching him?
Tin Woodsman: Well, I hardly know him.

Cowardly Lion: All right, I'll go in there for Dorothy. Wicked Witch or no Wicked Witch, guards or no guards, I'll tear them apart. I may not come out alive, but I'm going in there. There's only one thing I want you fellows to do.

All about Love

Scarecrow: [points other way] It's pleasant down that way, too.
Dorothy: That's funny. Wasn't he pointing the other way?
Scarecrow: [points both ways] Of course, some people do go both ways.

Scarecrow: I don't know. But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?

Guardian of the Emerald City Gates: The wizard? But nobody can see the great Oz, nobody's *ever* seen the great Oz... even I've never seen him!
Dorothy: Well then, how do you know there is one?

I particularly like the one about beliefs. It brings up two sentiments in my mind.

About faith: it is often an easy recrimination of atheists to invalidate God's existence. The fact is faith is a sentiment inhabiting believers. There is no practical way of demonstrating God's existence, nor is it to prove jewish, christian or muslim God is better...

About believes or convictions: it is very important to acknowledge intuition in business (and life in general). Like in golf, sometimes, you just can't see the target; you have to take a shot in the dark and trust your cadie. Trust your advisors! But always leave space for your own intuition. If you believe the green is there, aim at the pin!

Experience is the key to being right without seeing. It is easier to forsee the outcome of a situation if you have seen similar situations in the past. Again, when lacking experience, choose your advisors according to that trait and trust them!

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz received praise from critics and readers alike. Critics applauded Baum's simple storytelling, his message, and his imaginative, believable characters. Readers fell in love with the wonders of Oz and demanded more books about this enchanted land. Although the book did not win any awards during Baum's lifetime, it was given the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1968.

Watched this movie last week inflight and that quote of the scarecrow about people who talk a lot really made me laugh, it's the quote that stuck after an 8hr flight. Reminds me of all the showoff people i've encountered who talks a lot but when you listen closely there's nothing relevant in all their blabber.. an empty can IS noisy indeed
